Hello and welcome to my website which focuses on my artwork. My name is Michael Giannella, I’m an artist from New Jersey. My areas of focus are around my paintings and my ceramic functional pottery. I’m consider myself a mixed media artist who uses a variety of different mediums and substrates to accomplish my goals in a particular piece I create. Most of my paintings is Encaustic but I also use watercolor, oil and india inks in some of my work.

Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” (enkaustikos). Heat is used throughout the entire process, melting the beeswax during each layer that is applied. Encaustic consists of natural bees wax and dammar resin (crystallized tree sap). The medium can be used alone for its transparency or adhesive qualities or used pigmented to gain a richly opaque colors.

Along with Encaustic painting, Michael has worked in Ceramic Art making functional pottery. Handmade mugs, plates and bowls made to be used and enjoyed. Michael plans to start blending his Encaustic and Ceramic work and start making ceramics with encaustic surfaces. He enjoys his creative process and expressing himself in his work.
